Josh aims to swim for Australia at the Paralympic Games in London

Our Club member Josh Hofer has to swim in the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships in South Australia 15-22 March in order to qualify for the London Paralympics. As Josh is such a valued member of our Club, always willing to take on the extra jobs, and being one of the first ones to put his entries in when asked to swim for the Club in Carnivals we would like to help him with air fares etc to get to Adelaide.

If everyone in the Club put in a few dollars it would be a big help to Josh so myself or one of the Committee will be coming around soon after we get back to swimming to collect so hopefully you can put some cash in your swim bag.

If you don’t usually go to training or Club nights and would like to donate something to Josh please do a direct debit to the Club Bank A/c and mark you deposit “for Josh” we will make sure he gets it.

Thanks

New Club T/shirts:

To check out the design of our new club shirts, go to www.aussiepacific.com.au, then “Go to Driwear – Polos – Mens (or Ladies Polos) then click on Eureka 1304 (men) 2304 (ladies) (2nd row, red and yellow shirt men, white and blue ladies) which comes up with the sizes and our shirt is the 3rd row, one on the left.

To decide on your size, get a shirt you have that fits as you want your new one to fit, and lay it out on a flat surface. Locate the spot where the arms join the body of the shirt. Next, measure about 2.5 cm down, then measure the width (this is the 1/2 chest measurement) across the shirt. Don’t forget the ladies’ ones are shaped and have shorter sleeves than the mens’. So if you don’t like “poncy girl sleeves(!)” or the tapered look, ladies may wish to order a mens’ version!

Please order ASAP through our Committee girls:

Please order ASAP through our Committee girls:

e.g. a swim of 28.09 receives 10 points for swimming and a bonus of 9 which gives that person 19 points for that event (10 + 9 = 19).

Other examples are:

swim 38.42 add 2 bonus points (10 + 2 = 12),

swim 40.55 add 5 points (10 + 5 = 15).

This method has been selected because it:

Enables members to be in the running by going in a few events. A participant doing less events may achieve higher scoring points if they are lucky.

Rewards members that do more than 6 events by providing them with more chances to obtain a higher score

The randomness of the bonus points provides an element of luck that means all members regardless of their swimming ability a chance of winning.

A lovely report on Beryl and Alan’s recent trip:

Wilpana Pound, Lake Eyre and Outback Australia

Alan and I did a trip in three “Piper Chieftains” aircraft with Villa Carlotta Tours, a wonderful extensive trip with 22 people, beginning at Sydney.

Flew over Western Plains at low level being able to see the beauty of the land to “Murgo National Park” where we saw the structure called “Walls of China” rising up to 70 feet and those interested in Aboriginal history with remains there, up to 40,000 years old. Back onto plane and on to Mildura which we explored. Next day boarded PS Melbourne a wood fired paddle steamer for a cruise through the Murray Lock system, very interesting.

Next day flew over Flinders Ranges very beautiful and onto Willpena Pound which is the remains of a volcano in a big circle flying inside the Pound so close to the mountains we felt we could touch them. Then flying on to Lake Eyre where we landed and went by bus to the Lake and walking along the shore line. One of the pilots had swim in the Lake, he was swimming very high in the water because of the buoyancy of the heavy salt. All this huge area is part of a large artesian basin and had to pass through the Dingo Proof Fence, then on to Roxby Downs, which is a large Mining area and a very nice little town.

Next day on to Birdsville located on SA & Qld border and originally used to collect tolls from drovers moving cattle interstate, and was previously known as Diamantina Crossing and later named because of the bird life in the area and lakes there. With Federation in 1901 the tolls were abolished.

Next stop was to Thargomindah where we visited a Cotton Gin and Cotton Farm and saw the Cotton cleaned and baled, an interesting day.

Next town was Bourke where we had a cruise in the paddle boat on the Murray Darling at Wentworth. The cruise was very good and lots of information of the area by the cruise captain. Had a walk around the town with Stuart Johnson who covered the development of Bourke from past to present. Our flight over the Blue Mountains was beautiful, back to Sydney. A wonderful tour in a land and air journey.

President’s report for October 2011

Volunteers play an important part of our great club, Masters Swimming WA, Masters Swimming Australia and Masters Swimming worldwide. We are very lucky to have many special volunteers in our Club who quietly help things run smoothly.

The Chief Executive Officer of Volunteers WA recently gave a talk at the Masters Swimming WA Presidents Meeting and wanted to pass her thanks to some deserving people. It gave me great pleasure to pass on a Volunteers WA T shirt and cap to Dave Cuzens and a swatch watch and bag to Marion Woolston as a small acknowledgement of their many hours helping our Club. Also many thanks to all other members who regularly give up their time either by coaching, volunteering on the committee, timekeeping or officiating at swim meets. Many thanks to you all!

Stadium Snappers Be Active Club Challenge on Sunday 11 September 2011.

Thanks to our coaches and Captains for helping Osborne Park achieve a 2nd place at this recent BACC. Despite illness, which resulted in the cancellation of the Womens relay, the Men’s 240+ Relay of John Fussell, John Musty, Ian Jennison and John Lockley were clear winners in their age group in the great time of 2:36.56. Well done to all who participated and Helen Morris was very happy to go home with another raffle prize.

Social Scene Many thanks to Marion for organising another great night at the Garrick Theatre for the “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much; Marion is now taking names to see their next production “the Mousetrap” in November.

Publicity A big thank you to Mary Heath for contacting the local community newspaper The Eastern Reporter, which resulted in a great photo and article in two of the Community Newspapers on 20 September 2011 (the Eastern Reporter and the Stirling Times). Already we have had 4 enquiries from possible new members. Please make all possible new members welcome if/when you see them poolside.

The John Hull Memorial Award The Top Ten as at 3 August 2011 was:

1. Geoffrey Scott 1074

2. Pat Nicholl 969

3. Susette Pow 904

4. David Cuzens 885

5. Eli Kitay 883

6. John Musty 855

7. Penny Green 803

8. Joshua Hofer 798

9. Jeff Morris 770

10. Heather Whitehead 719

There will be no further updates until the winner is announced at our Christmas Party on 18 December 2011 but there are still plenty of opportunities to improve your score with Club nights on 5 October and 2 November 2011 as well as our own Be Active Club Challenge on 27 November 2011. The greater your participation, the greater your chance to win!

President’s report for August 2011

Whilst the weather has been cool, windy and wet I hope all our members have been inspired by the efforts of Cadel Evans in the Tour de France and the great swimming witnessed in the World Championships during July.

Congratulations to all 17 swimmers who competed at the recent “Be Active Club Challenges at Swan Hills on 3 July 2011 and the 3 swimmers (Kerensa, John F and Joshua) who managed a 4th overall at the Open Meet in Bunbury on 24 July 2011. Well done to every one involved and especially our Captains who organised the entries and relays.

Hopefully we won’t have 12 club members on holidays for our next interclub competition on Sunday 14 August 2011 – the Groper Short Course Relay carnival which is always a great event. DON’T FORGET TO GET YOUR $10.00 ENTRY FEE for the Short Course Relay carnival to Penny as soon as possible.

Social Scene Many thanks to Marion for organising another great Club event on Sunday 17 July at the Mallard Duck for a “Christmas in July”. Great food, great company and surprise appearance by John Lockley’s special “Christmas Hat” made for a very enjoyable afternoon.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Left Bank in East Fremantle for a Sunday Buffet breakfast on 21 August 2011. $22.50 per head and a 9:00am start. Please contact Marion Ph 9371 6771 if you wish to attend or for more details.
Move to Bayswater Waves. Thanks to the help from the Bayswater Waves pool management , we have now moved to the indoor 10 lane 25m pool for our Wednesday Club nights This allows much easier access in and out of the pool and is close to the storeroom for our Notice board/ hooter etc. We have also been very lucky to be given access to a great room just near the entrance for our Wednesday night club nights.

We are getting good numbers at the evening training sessions despite the recent weather. Training times and Club nights remain on the same days and times. We look forward to seeing you all over the next few months as the weather improves.

Club Captains:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those swimmers who have participated in the BACC meets. I would like to congratulate Stefano on your 100 meters at Swan Hills in the time of 1:12.00 which is 8 secs faster than your previous time, the sprint training has paid off.

There are 365 days, 52 Sundays and 6 BACC meets in a year (This includes the state relays and the states).

365 = 1.6% of your 98.4% of your days a year.
52 = 3.1% of your 96.9% of your Sundays a year.

When we look at the above statistics Osborne Park Masters Swimming Club are not asking much from swimmers. I know everybody has commitments but for those who offer their time to train and coach for nothing I think it is down to us swimmers to show our appreciation and make the time and effort to attend these BACC meets.

John and I feel as though we are putting pressure on people to participate. We all have commitments and most of us put a side time and dates so that we can attend these meets.

Club Captains would like to see more enthusiasm from swimmers to take part in these meets…

Death of an Olympian

West Australian Olympian Percy Oliver, uncle of our Club member National and State Record Holder Helen Bird, passed away on 9th July at the age of 92. Perc represented Australia in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin coming 7th in the 110yds Backstroke at the age of 17 and won gold in 1938 at the Empire Games in Sydney. Helen’s Mum (also a champion backstroker) coached Perc between the ages of 10 – 14.

It seems that being a backstroke champion is a family trait

President’s report for July 2011

Our club should be very proud of all our volunteers and award winners who were acknowledged at the Masters Swimming WA Award and Volunteers function on Sunday 26 June 2011.

Awards were presented for the State Championships (which were held in conjunction with the recent Nationals) and I was very proud to accept several bags of silver medals on behalf of our great club for coming 2nd overall. At our Happy Hour on 29 June 2011 we distributed these to all our swimmers including those who entered but because of illness or other reasons did not swim.

Congratulations to our State Championship age group Winners…Geoffrey Scott and Marg Gleghorn and our many 2nd and 3rd place-getters. Also at the function, age group winners for the 2010/11 Dale Alcock Open Water Swim Series were presented with a wine glass and certificate. Winners from our club include:

Helen Morris, Pat Nicholl, Eli Kitay and myself.

All members who attended the function enjoyed the great food and entertainment from our MC Peter Warden (who also was an announcer at the Nationals).

Beatty Park Renovation

Hopefully all members are now aware that as Beatty Park is no longer taking bookings from 11 July 2011, our club is pleased to have been able to secure bookings at Bayswater Waves. The great facilities and friendly management will be our “base” until Beatty Park begins to take bookings again.

Masters Swimming WA Development Officer Gary Bradley has been meeting with a dozen or so swimmers who are interested in forming a new club at Bayswater Waves.
Message from Secretary – Mary

Masters Swimming WA are conducting two workshops to teach Club representatives how to do two important admin jobs. They are registrations – now done on line and called Clubs on Line (COL) and recording through Team Manager (TM)

Notices from MSWA office:

CLUBS ON-LINE (COL) EDUCATION
1) Workshops – we are bringing over MSA’s Operations Manager Sarah Roach who will be conducting workshops on 1st and 2nd August (dates confirmed) for Club Registrars (and successors) in time for 1st September 2011 commencement of discount membership period.

The workshop will be repeated 3 times within the 2 days so as to give Club personnel every opportunity to attend.

TEAM MANAGER WORKSHOP
Workshop to be held on Saturday 30th July 1.30 to 4.30pm here at Sports House Mt Claremont. This workshop is aimed at Club Recorders and will be an ideal refresher for your current personnel and a good opportunity to have others learn

At this time our Club Registrar Penny is the only person who knows how to do COL and our Club Captains, plus Jeff and Geraldine are the only ones who know how to do TM. We need back ups for these willing volunteers. This is an ideal opportunity to take advantage of the teaching being available and to support your Club

Contact me on maryhe@bigpond.com and I will forward all the information including the registration form. Registration forms to MSWA by 25th July

From our Club Captains:

Club Captains would like to thank all the swimmers who participated in the Nationals, I believe that we obtained a good amount of individual medals from our youngest swimmer to our oldest swimmer Eli Kitay.

We would like to take this opportunity to say well done to those who participated in the relays and had accept our changes- you did the club captains proud. I have never shouted so hard in so many Osborne Park relays, we were behind, then in front it was so exciting and amazing to see people like Helen Morris, Mary Heath, Geoff Scott and so on achieving a medal this just shows we worked well as a team.

On presentation day we won the 280+ and the 320+ over all relays, so well done to those who swam in these relays…

Probably most of use don’t want to be reminded about the next BACC, well it is on the 3rd of July at Swan Hills. Just to warn you all the club captains will be coming around soon to hopefully have a huge amount of swimmers….. Please can we have some swimmers who are interested to swim on that day to volunteer to do 100m Butterfly from all ages 30,40,50,60,70,80 we do know that we will not get swimmers from all ages but the more we receive the more relay entries….

Thanks and carry on enjoying swimming with Osborne Park

President’s report for May 2011

Congratulations to everyone in our club for a great performance at the 2011 Masters Swimming Championships (“The Nationals”) from 27 April to 1 May 2011

A huge thank you to our Captains Ian &John for organising our great relays and helping our Club to achieve the great result of 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze in the relays. We should also not forget Joshua Hofer helped WA achieve a silver in the Branch Relay. Also a very big thank you to ALL our coaches and guest coaches John Fussell and Ralph McManis who ensured that all our swimmers were in top shape. In all there were 43 medals in the Individual swims (13 Gold, 14 Silver and 16 Bronze), 7 relay medals and 5 in the Open water swim.

We should also be very proud of all our officials (Heather Whitehead and Dave Cuzens) and our many volunteers (too many to mention them all!) that helped out with registration, marshalling and timekeeping. Heather Whitehead should also be thanked for the huge number of hours being involved with the Organising Committee to ensure that all the volunteers were in the right place at the right time. On behalf of everyone at Osborne Park well done Heather!

There are always great memories of each Nationals but a few stood out this year:

The friendly faces of Osborne Park members volunteering on the registration desks

Mary Heath kissing Ian Jennison and John Musty for picking her in her 2 gold medal winning relays and also kissing John Lockley for help with improving her stroke

Penny Green forgetting that she didn’t have her bathers on before getting ready for an event

Great commentary from Peter Warden and Andrea Williams

Friendly sausage sizzles after each days events

Great welcome and presentation functions

Great swims by all Osborne Park members in their relays and fantastic individual swims by our golden girls and boys…John Fussell, Helen Bird, Delise Griffiths, Eli Kitay, Bryce Jones and Ian Jennison.

Well done to everyone who either cheered or came down to support and those swimmers unfortunate to have health problems which restricted or prevented their swimming, we hope that you can get back on the road to recovery and hopefully we will see you all at our next Be Active Club Challenge at Swan Hills on 3 July 2011.

Open Water Swimming

Helen & I swam in the 4k Albany Harbour swim on 24 April 2011. We enjoyed beautiful conditions. 25 degrees outside and 19.5 degrees in the water, no wind and no other nasties (read stingers or sharks!). Both of us achieved PBs and we celebrated with a vanilla slice at a café in York Street!.

The John Hull Memorial Award

After 4 May Club swim and the Nationals our current Top Ten are:

On 4 May 2011 in the West Australian:

“…the Town of Vincent last night unanimously approved a staged multi-million dollar overhaul of the iconic, but ageing centre.

It will now tender for the $16.45 million first stage of the four year upgrade, which will start in July with the eight lane, 50m outdoor pool- the first Olympic-sized pool in WA- to be demolished and rebuilt to 10 lanes.”
